While we celebrate our successes, we also stand by our community in times of hardship. Recently, “Sam,” a young LGBTQ+ asylum seeker we support in Dakar, was the victim of a targeted attack. Lured into a dangerous situation through a social app, Sam was brutally attacked and assaulted by a group. He managed to return home after the assault and, thanks to UNHCR support, received immediate medical attention.

Sam fled his home country, Guinea Conakry, two years ago to escape persecution. Life in Dakar hasn’t been easy, and this incident reminds us of the intense risks LGBTQ+ asylum seekers face, even when they’re supposed to be in a safer place. Through this difficult time, Sam has found comfort and solidarity within our safe house and continues to receive support as he recovers.
