This Pride Month, Rainbow Haven had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Pride celebrations in Ottawa and Montreal, and what an unforgettable experience it was! Our participation was made possible thanks to a group of extraordinary volunteers—Africans from diverse cultures and backgrounds, including Gambia, Senegal, Ghana, and Guinea.
These amazing individuals, who are also seeking asylum in Canada, brought a unique perspective to our mission. When they learned about Rainbow Haven’s initiative to support LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in Africa, they were determined to help spread the word. For many of them, this cause hits close to home. They understand firsthand the dire situations LGBTQ+ asylum seekers face in Africa, especially those who are homeless and living in fear. Their dedication and hard work made it possible for us to raise awareness about the safety and well-being of LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in Africa, even without an official booth or tent in the ground.
A Community of Support and Solidarity
Our volunteers were truly the heartbeat of our presence at these Pride events. They tirelessly walked through the crowds, shared our story, and encouraged people to learn more about Rainbow Haven’s mission. Their commitment to advocating for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ individuals was evident in every conversation they had. Because of them, we were able to reach so many more people and spread our message of compassion and solidarity. In their words, “We know how difficult the situation is for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in Africa. Many of us have lived through it, and we believe it’s our duty to help however we can.” Their empathy and understanding were inspiring, and their efforts have brought us closer to building a safer and more inclusive world for all.
Looking to the Future
While we didn’t have a booth or tent this year, the overwhelming support from our volunteers has encouraged us to aim for one in future events. We are excited about the possibility of having a dedicated space to connect with even more people, share our mission, and raise funds to support those who need it most.
